Chapter 1

The silence in the nursery was profound,

heavy with the weight of secrets finally laid to rest.

I watched Elena sleep,

her tiny chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm.

The deleted voicemail from Ethan should have felt like a victory,

but a lingering shadow remained in the back of my mind.

Gabriel stepped into the room,

his dark suit absorbing the dim light of the evening.

He didn't speak immediately,

which was always his way of preparing me for bad news.

I gently placed Elena into her crib,

pulling the soft pink blanket over her shoulders.

When I turned to face my brother,

his jaw was set in a hard,

unforgiving line.

"He didn't act alone,"

Gabriel whispered,

his voice barely carrying across the room.

I froze,

my hand resting on the edge of the wooden crib.

"What do you mean,"

I asked,

my heart rate picking up slightly.

"The forged insurance policy,"

Gabriel began,

"was processed through a private equity firm."

"A firm that doesn't officially exist,"

he added,

his eyes darkening.

Ethan was a monster,

but he was an arrogant,

sloppy monster.

He didn't have the connections to fabricate a twenty-million-dollar policy without triggering alarms.

Someone with real power had helped him,

someone who stood to gain from my death.

I crossed my arms,

suddenly feeling the chill of the large house.

"Who,"

I demanded,

refusing to let fear take root again.

"A syndicate,"

Gabriel replied,

"operating out of the Cayman Islands."

"They use desperate,

greedy men like your ex-husband to acquire assets."

"Ethan promised them Blackwood Holdings,"

he explained,

"and they provided the resources to make you disappear."

My stomach twisted,

not with panic,

but with a cold,

sharp anger.

They thought I was just a naive housewife,

a stepping stone to my family's empire.

"They want their investment back,"

Gabriel warned,

"and Ethan is currently negotiating a deal with the prosecutors to give them up."

"He thinks it will buy him a reduced sentence,"

I realized,

shaking my head at his relentless cowardice.

"It will buy him a death sentence,"

Gabriel corrected,

"because these people do not leave loose ends."

I looked back at my sleeping daughter,

realizing that the war wasn't over.

It had only just expanded.

"Double the security,"

I ordered,

my voice steady and cold.

Gabriel nodded,

a faint smile touching his lips.

"Already done,"

he confirmed,

"but we need to prepare for the fallout."

"Let them fall,"

I said,

"I am done hiding."

For years,

I had diminished myself to make Ethan comfortable.

I had traded my inheritance for a domestic illusion,

believing peace could be found in submission.

I was wrong.

Peace is only found in strength,

and I was a Blackwood.

It was time the rest of the world remembered exactly what that meant.

The nursery felt different now,

no longer just a sanctuary,

but a fortress.

I kissed my fingers and pressed them gently against Elena's door.

"I will protect you,"

May you like

I promised the silent room,

"no matter what it takes."
