Chapter 8

Weeks passed,

and the dust from the trial began to settle into a new reality.

I was reviewing quarterly projections in my home office,

the soft glow of the fireplace keeping the winter chill at bay.

A knock sounded at the door,

and my chief of security entered,

holding a sealed envelope.

"A report from the Swiss facility, ma'am,"

he stated,

handing me the thick paper.

I opened it slowly,

pulling out a single photograph and a typed psychological evaluation.

It was Vanessa.

She was sitting in a walled garden,

staring blankly at a snow-covered mountain in the distance.

She looked healthy,

but her eyes were completely vacant,

devoid of the smug ambition that had once defined her.

The report detailed her profound depression,

her constant paranoia,

and her realization that she was permanently trapped in a gilded cage.

She had no money,

no identity,

and no future beyond the walls of the clinic.

I placed the photograph on my desk,

feeling a strange sense of closure.

I didn't hate her anymore,

hate required energy,

and she wasn't worth the effort.

She had tried to steal a life that wasn't hers,

and now she had no life at all.

"Continue her funding,"

I ordered the security chief,

"but restrict all outside communication indefinitely."

"Understood,"

he replied,

bowing his head respectfully before leaving the room.

I turned my attention back to the massive screens on my wall,

displaying the global assets of Blackwood Holdings.

The company was thriving,

the stock prices soaring after I violently purged the corruption Ethan had planted.

The board of directors no longer questioned my authority,

they feared me,

and in our world,

fear was a much more reliable currency than respect.

I walked out of the office and down the long hallway toward the nursery.

The house was quiet,

the security patrols moving silently outside the windows.

I pushed the door open gently,

smiling as I saw Elena sitting on the plush rug.

She was playing with a set of wooden blocks,

her dark hair falling into her eyes.

When she saw me,

she let out a joyful squeal,

reaching her chubby arms up toward me.

I knelt down,

scooping her into my embrace,

breathing in the sweet scent of baby powder and innocence.

"You are getting so big,"

I whispered,

kissing her soft cheek.

She babbled happily,

grabbing a fistful of my silk blouse.

Every time I looked at her,

I was reminded of the night I almost lost everything on that cold marble floor.

But that memory no longer paralyzed me with fear,

it fueled my determination.

I had built an impenetrable fortress around her,

a legacy of wealth and power that no man could ever threaten.

She would never know the sting of betrayal,

she would never be made to feel small or powerless.

She was a Blackwood,

and she would grow up knowing that the world belonged to her.

I rocked her gently,

the fireplace crackling in the corner of the room.

The storm had passed,

May you like

the monsters were locked away,

and the future was finally ours to write.
