Chapter 17

The damp,

heavy fog of London clung to the historic stone architecture,

the city lights reflecting off the wet pavement in a dazzling array of colors.

I stepped out of the black town car,

the crimson silk of my gown trailing across the damp ground,

a striking contrast to the bleak,

grey night.

The National Gallery loomed before me,

its massive columns bathed in artificial light,

the entrance swarming with the global elite,

their faces hidden behind elaborate,

jeweled masks.

I wore a delicate mask of black lace,

obscuring my features just enough to remain a mystery,

while allowing the dangerous glint in my eyes to shine through clearly.

Gabriel walked beside me,

dressed in an immaculate tuxedo,

his earpiece hidden seamlessly in the shadows of his dark hair,

a silent guardian in a sea of wolves.

"His security detail is neutralized,"

Gabriel whispered,

his voice barely carrying over the chatter of the arriving guests,

"our men have replaced his drivers and door guards."

"Excellent,"

I replied smoothly,

handing my invitation to the attendant,

who bowed deeply,

ushering us into the grand,

echoing hall of the museum.

The masquerade was a spectacle of wealth and vanity,

champagne towers glittering under the classical paintings,

the string quartet playing a haunting,

beautiful melody.

I glided through the crowd,

moving with the fluid grace of a predator,

my eyes scanning the room,

filtering through the masks and the laughter,

searching for my prey.

It did not take long to find him,

standing near a massive Renaissance painting,

holding court among a group of sycophantic politicians,

his arrogant laughter cutting through the elegant music.

Victor Sterling wore a mask of pure gold,

a tasteless display of his exorbitant wealth,

his posture reeking of unearned confidence and foolish security.

"Hold your position,"

I murmured to Gabriel,

detaching myself from his side,

and drifting slowly across the marble floor,

my crimson dress commanding attention from everyone I passed.

I approached Victor's circle,

my presence alone causing the conversation to falter,

the men stepping aside instinctively,

parting like sheep before a lioness.

"Mr. Sterling,"

I said,

my voice soft,

melodic,

and laced with a deadly,

icy calm.

He turned,

his golden mask flashing in the light,

his eyes dragging over my figure with obvious appreciation,

completely unaware of the venom hidden behind my polite smile.

"Do I know you, my dear,"

he asked smoothly,

offering a charming,

practiced smile,

a glass of champagne held loosely in his hand.

"We share a mutual acquaintance,"

I replied,

stepping intimately close to him,

the scent of his expensive cologne mixing with the smell of my own perfume.

"A man named Ethan,"

I added softly,

my words dropping like a heavy stone into a quiet pond,

the subtle reference instantly shifting the atmosphere.

Victor froze,

his charming smile vanishing instantly,

the golden mask suddenly unable to hide the raw,

naked panic flashing in his eyes.

"Who are you,"

he demanded,

his voice dropping to a harsh whisper,

looking frantically around for his missing security guards.

I leaned in closer,

my lips almost brushing his ear,

my voice a terrifying,

inescapable promise of ruin.

"I am the widow you tried to kill,"

I whispered,

"I am the mother you tried to threaten,

and I am the architect of your complete,

absolute destruction."

He stumbled backward,

the champagne glass slipping from his trembling fingers,

shattering loudly against the immaculate marble floor,

the sharp sound echoing through the silent,

watching crowd.

The game was over,

May you like

the mask had fallen,

and the queen had finally cornered the king.
