CHAPTER 11 — The Woman Who Knew Everything

Elena didn't move.

The black sedan idled beside the curb.

Rain had begun to fall.

The elderly woman in the back seat looked at her calmly.

Silver hair.

Elegant black coat.

Sharp blue eyes that missed nothing.

She repeated herself.

"Get in."

Elena took one step backward.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled faintly.

"Someone who has spent twenty years waiting for Victor Hale to make one mistake."

Elena's heartbeat accelerated.

"How do you know Victor?"

The woman's expression hardened.

"Because he destroyed my family."

Behind Elena...

The two men searching the motel had reached the alley.

One of them pointed.

"There she is!"

The elderly woman didn't even turn around.

She simply unlocked the car door.

"You have five seconds."

"If you stay..."

"They'll take you."

"If you come with me..."

"You may finally learn the truth."

Three seconds.

Two.

One.

Elena climbed inside.

The sedan pulled away just as the two men reached the street.

Several blocks later...

The woman handed Elena a towel.

"Dry your face."

Elena ignored it.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Margaret Ashcroft."

The name meant nothing to Elena.

Margaret noticed.

"It wouldn't."

"You were only a child when Victor destroyed us."

She reached into a leather folder.

Removed an old newspaper.

The headline was yellow with age.

BILLIONAIRE HEIR DIES DAYS BEFORE WEDDING

Elena had seen it before.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Margaret looked out the window.

"The man who died..."

"...was my son."

Silence filled the car.

"My son trusted the wrong woman."

Margaret continued.

"She claimed she loved him."

"She claimed she was carrying his child."

Elena slowly looked down.

A fake pregnancy.

Again.

Margaret nodded as if reading her thoughts.

"Victor didn't invent that lie for you."

"He perfected it long before you."

Across town...

Ethan and Nathan sat inside Detective Collins' office.

The investigation board now covered an entire wall.

Photographs.

Financial charts.

Fake identities.

Missing women.

Murder victims.

Twenty years of carefully hidden crimes.

Detective Collins pinned one more photograph to the board.

Margaret Ashcroft.

Nathan frowned.

"I know that name."

Ethan looked at him.

"You do?"

Nathan nodded slowly.

"My company once tried to acquire Ashcroft International."

"They refused every offer."

Detective Collins folded her arms.

"They refused because Margaret disappeared from public life after her son's death."

Ethan stared at the photograph.

"So she's still alive."

Collins nodded.

"And according to our sources..."

"She's been secretly investigating Victor Hale for two decades."

Nathan looked confused.

"If she's been investigating him that long..."

"Why hasn't she stopped him?"

Detective Collins answered quietly.

"Because every witness disappeared."

"Every file vanished."

"Every detective assigned to the case either retired..."

"...or died."

The room became silent.

This organization wasn't merely wealthy.

It was protected.

Meanwhile...

Margaret's sedan entered a gated estate hidden deep in the countryside.

Security cameras covered every entrance.

Private guards opened the gates without a word.

Elena looked around nervously.

"What is this place?"

"My home."

The mansion wasn't extravagant.

It was fortified.

Every window reinforced.

Every gate electronically secured.

Margaret noticed Elena's expression.

"I stopped trusting luck a long time ago."

Inside...

Margaret led Elena into a library.

An enormous wall had been transformed into an investigation center.

Hundreds of photographs.

Strings connecting names.

Maps.

Financial records.

Victim profiles.

Elena froze.

One entire section of the wall was dedicated to her.

Childhood photographs.

School records.

Hospital bills.

Recruitment documents.

Even recent surveillance images.

"You've been watching me."

Margaret nodded.

"For twelve years."

Elena looked horrified.

"Why?"

"Because I promised your mother."

Elena's knees nearly gave out.

"My..."

"...mother?"

Margaret opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A smiling woman stood beside a teenage Elena and a little boy.

"Liam..."

Elena whispered.

Margaret gently handed her the picture.

"Your mother came to me."

"The night before she died."

Elena's hands trembled.

"No..."

Margaret's voice softened.

"She knew Victor had chosen you."

"She begged me to protect both of you."

Tears filled Elena's eyes.

"Why didn't you?"

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

"I tried."

"But Victor found you first."

At that exact moment...

Across the city...

Victor Hale entered an underground conference room.

Several men in expensive suits were already waiting.

One chair remained empty.

The chair at the head of the table.

No one sat there.

No one dared.

Victor spoke first.

"Subject Nineteen escaped."

One of the men frowned.

"Should we terminate her?"

Victor answered immediately.

"No."

"The Director wants her alive."

Another man asked,

"And Ethan Bennett?"

Victor looked toward the empty chair.

"He continues investigating."

The room fell silent.

Then...

Without warning...

A hidden door opened.

Every man immediately stood.

No one looked directly toward the entrance.

Only polished black shoes became visible beneath the doorway.

A calm voice echoed through the room.

"So..."

"Our little problem continues."

Victor lowered his head.

"Yes, Director."

The unseen figure spoke only one sentence.

"Bring me Ethan..."

"...alive."

Back at Margaret's estate...

Elena sat in silence.

Still staring at the photograph of her family.

Margaret quietly placed another file before her.

"This belongs to you."

Elena opened it.

Inside...

Was her original birth certificate.

Her school diploma.

Her passport.

Every document proving she had once existed as Elena Brooks.

Not Vanessa.

Not Subject Nineteen.

Elena burst into tears.

For the first time in twelve years...

Someone had given her back her own name.

Just then...

A security guard hurried into the library.

"Mrs. Ashcroft."

She looked up.

"What is it?"

The guard's expression was grim.

"Our surveillance team spotted three black SUVs approaching the estate."

Margaret calmly closed the file.

"They found us."

Elena's face turned pale.

"What do we do?"

Margaret stood.

Her voice remained steady.

"We stop running."

She opened another drawer.

Inside...

Was a loaded handgun.

She handed it to the guard.

Then looked directly at Elena.

"Victor thinks he's coming to hunt a frightened woman."

A faint smile crossed Margaret's face.

May you like

"Tonight..."

"...he's walking into a trap."
