CHAPTER 9 — She Was Never Vanessa

"Ethan..."
David's voice was barely audible.
Blood seeped through his fingers as Ethan knelt beside him.
"Stay with me."
David tried to nod.
"It..."
"...wasn't Victor."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"The shooter..."
"...was someone else."
His hand slowly opened.
Inside was the torn page he had ripped from Victor's file before the lights went out.
Across the top, printed in bold black letters, were three chilling words.
NEXT TARGET: ETHAN BENNETT.
Below that...
A recent photograph of Ethan.
His daily schedule.
His office address.
His home.
His gym.
Even the coffee shop he visited every morning.
Someone had been watching him for months.
Sirens filled the streets.
Paramedics rushed David into an ambulance.
The bullet had passed through his shoulder.
He would survive.
But Ethan barely noticed.
His eyes remained fixed on the apartment building.
Victor had escaped.
Again.
An hour later...
The police sealed the apartment.
Detectives photographed every room.
Every fake passport.
Every silicone pregnancy belly.
Every forged medical record.
It was enough evidence to expose a massive criminal operation.
But Victor Hale was gone.
So was Vanessa.
Nathan arrived just after midnight.
Ethan had asked him to come.
Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw.
The apartment looked like a factory for stolen lives.
Rows of disguises.
Boxes of fake identities.
Marriage licenses.
Pregnancy files.
Wedding photographs.
Nathan whispered,
"She lived in this world..."
Ethan answered quietly.
"Long before she met you."
Nathan slowly walked through the apartment.
Then stopped in front of a wall covered with women's photographs.
Twenty-three faces.
Twenty-three different names.
He looked closer.
His heart skipped.
Vanessa.
Or at least...
The woman he knew as Vanessa.
Her photograph was there.
But the name beneath it wasn't.
It read:
Subject 19
Real Name: Elena Brooks
Nathan stared in disbelief.
"What?"
Ethan took the file from the wall.
Inside were fingerprints.
A birth certificate.
School records.
The photograph of a little girl smiling beside an older woman.
The child's name wasn't Vanessa.
It was Elena Marie Brooks.
Nathan looked at Ethan.
"She..."
"...was never Vanessa."
The police detective joined them.
"We've identified her."
Nathan waited.
"Who is she?"
The detective sighed.
"Elena Brooks disappeared twelve years ago."
Nathan blinked.
"Disappeared?"
"Officially."
"But after seeing this..."
He looked around the apartment.
"I don't think she disappeared."
"I think she was recruited."
Ethan opened the file.
The first pages told a heartbreaking story.
Elena Brooks.
Age nineteen.
Outstanding student.
Scholarship recipient.
Her mother died of cancer.
Her younger brother required expensive heart surgery.
Medical debt exceeded two hundred thousand dollars.
Then...
The records stopped.
Instead...
Another document appeared.
Recruitment Assessment
Nathan frowned.
"What is this?"
The detective answered quietly.
"Victor Hale found vulnerable women."
"Women with impossible financial problems."
"And offered them a solution."
Ethan continued reading.
Victor's notes filled every page.
Emotionally resilient.
Highly intelligent.
Strong acting ability.
Excellent memory.
Then...
One sentence highlighted in red.
Suitable for long-term infiltration.
Nathan felt sick.
"So..."
"They trained her."
The detective nodded.
"Looks that way."
Across town...
Vanessa—Elena—sat inside an abandoned church.
Victor stood near the altar.
She hadn't spoken during the entire drive.
Finally...
She whispered,
"You lied about everything."
Victor looked at her calmly.
"I told you what you needed to know."
"You said I could leave after Nathan."
"You were naïve enough to believe that."
Elena stared at him.
"My real name..."
"You erased it."
Victor shrugged.
"You accepted a new identity."
"No."
"You took it from me."
Victor walked toward a stained-glass window.
"You were drowning."
"I offered you a lifeboat."
Elena's voice shook.
"You turned me into a criminal."
Victor smiled.
"I turned you into a survivor."
She looked away.
For years...
She had repeated those words to herself.
Now...
They sounded hollow.
Victor opened another folder.
He placed it on the old wooden pew.
Elena looked down.
A young woman's photograph.
Age twenty-two.
Beautiful.
Smiling.
"What is this?"
"Your replacement."
Elena's heart stopped.
"What?"
Victor answered as though discussing a business contract.
"You failed."
"So someone else will finish the work."
The file contained another name.
Subject 24
A new recruit.
A new target.
A new wealthy family.
The cycle had already begun again.
Meanwhile...
Nathan couldn't stop reading Elena's file.
Every page revealed another lie.
Another false identity.
Another fabricated memory.
Then...
Something unexpected.
A sealed envelope.
Across the front were handwritten words.
For Elena Only
Nathan hesitated.
Ethan looked at him.
"Open it."
Inside...
Was a letter.
Nathan immediately recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to Elena.
Not Vanessa.
The letter had clearly been written years earlier.
If you're reading this... I couldn't escape.
Nathan's breathing slowed.
He continued.
If I ever disappear... please tell my little brother I never stopped looking for him.
Another line.
I didn't choose this life.
I chose to save his.
Nathan lowered the letter.
His hands trembled.
For the first time...
He saw something beyond the lies.
A frightened young woman...
Who had once been someone's daughter.
Someone's sister.
Someone with dreams of her own.
Ethan quietly looked at his brother.
"What are you thinking?"
Nathan answered after a long silence.
"I don't know who Vanessa was."
"But I think..."
"...Elena died a long time ago."
Just before dawn...
David called from the hospital.
His voice sounded weak.
"Ethan..."
"I remembered something."
"What?"
"When the lights went out..."
"The shooter shouted a name."
Ethan waited.
"It wasn't Victor."
"Then who?"
David took a deep breath.
"He called him..."
Director.
The line fell silent.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
Victor Hale wasn't the man in charge.
He was following orders.
Which meant somewhere...
Above Victor...
There was someone far more powerful.
Someone no one had seen.
Someone the entire organization answered to.
May you like
And if Victor was only the second-in-command...
Then the nightmare had only just begun.
