CHAPTER 12 — The Brother Behind the Wheel

"Liam..."

The name escaped Elena's lips as little more than a whisper.

Every monitor in Margaret Ashcroft's security room displayed the same image.

A convoy of three black SUVs rolled slowly toward the estate gates.

Behind the wheel of the lead vehicle...

Was the little brother Elena had spent twelve years believing she would never see again.

Only...

He wasn't little anymore.

He was a grown man.

His face had matured.

His shoulders had broadened.

But his eyes...

She would have recognized those eyes anywhere.

Tears filled hers instantly.

"He's alive..."

Margaret didn't celebrate.

She stared at the screen with growing concern.

"Something's wrong."

Elena looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret zoomed in on the image.

"Liam isn't driving."

"He isn't making decisions."

Elena frowned.

"What?"

Margaret pointed at the passenger seat.

A man in a black suit sat beside Liam.

His face remained hidden beneath the SUV's tinted windshield.

But one thing was unmistakable.

A pistol rested against Liam's ribs.

"They're forcing him."

Elena's heart stopped.

"No..."

Outside...

The convoy slowed before the main gate.

One guard stepped forward.

"State your business."

The passenger lowered the window just enough to slide an envelope through the security slot.

"No business."

"A message."

The gate remained closed.

The guard carried the envelope inside.

Margaret opened it.

Only one sheet of paper lay inside.

Six words.

Trade Elena... or bury Liam.

No signature.

None was necessary.

Victor Hale had made his move.

Elena grabbed the note.

"No."

"I'm going."

Margaret stepped in front of her.

"You'll do no such thing."

"They'll kill him!"

"They'll kill both of you."

Elena's voice broke.

"He's my brother."

Margaret answered calmly.

"And that's exactly why Victor brought him."

"He knows you'll surrender."

Elena sank into a chair.

Every instinct screamed at her to run outside.

To save Liam.

To end this.

But deep inside...

She knew Margaret was right.

Victor wasn't negotiating.

He was baiting a trap.

Across town...

Ethan and Nathan were studying the evidence recovered from Apartment 17 when Detective Sarah Collins rushed into the conference room.

"We've got movement."

Ethan stood immediately.

"What happened?"

Sarah tossed a GPS tracker onto the table.

"The device we secretly placed inside Victor's warehouse equipment..."

"It's active."

Nathan frowned.

"So?"

"So it's moving."

"Toward Margaret Ashcroft's estate."

Ethan looked at the map.

His blood ran cold.

"He's found her."

Nathan grabbed his jacket.

"We're going."

Sarah nodded.

"I've already called tactical units."

Ethan stopped her.

"No."

She frowned.

"What?"

"If Victor sees police..."

"He'll execute Liam before they even reach the gate."

Sarah clenched her jaw.

"So what's your plan?"

Ethan looked at Nathan.

"We get there first."

Back at the estate...

Liam sat motionless behind the steering wheel.

His hands gripped it tightly.

The pistol remained pressed against his side.

Victor sat beside him.

Perfectly calm.

"You've been quiet."

Liam didn't answer.

Victor smiled.

"You still remember your sister."

A flicker crossed Liam's face.

Victor noticed.

"I raised you."

"I fed you."

"I educated you."

"And yet..."

"You still think about her."

Finally...

Liam spoke.

"You kidnapped me."

Victor's smile faded.

"I saved you."

"You turned me into another weapon."

Victor leaned closer.

"I turned you into a survivor."

The words were almost identical to those he had once used on Elena.

Liam closed his eyes.

He had heard them for fifteen years.

He no longer believed them.

Inside the mansion...

Margaret opened a hidden safe.

She removed a thick file.

Across the front were three words.

THE DIRECTOR

Elena looked at it.

"You know who he is?"

Margaret nodded slowly.

"I know his name."

Elena's eyes widened.

"Then why haven't you told the police?"

Margaret looked at her sadly.

"Because no one would believe me."

She opened the file.

Inside...

Newspaper clippings.

Corporate records.

Photographs.

Witness statements.

Financial transfers.

And one photograph that made Elena freeze.

Nathan.

Standing beside another man at a charity gala two years earlier.

Elena frowned.

"Who's that?"

Margaret answered quietly.

"The Director."

Elena stared at the photograph.

The man's face was perfectly visible.

Elegant.

Distinguished.

Smiling warmly at the cameras.

He looked nothing like a criminal.

He looked...

Respectable.

"Who is he?"

Margaret took a slow breath.

"One of the most admired businessmen in the country."

"He funds hospitals."

"Universities."

"Children's charities."

"No one would ever suspect him."

Elena whispered,

"What does he want?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Legacy."

She spread more documents across the table.

"For twenty years..."

"He has quietly infiltrated powerful families."

"He doesn't steal companies."

"He steals bloodlines."

Elena frowned.

"I don't understand."

Margaret pointed toward the fake pregnancy files.

"He wants legal heirs."

"He wants family trusts."

"He wants inheritance rights."

"He doesn't build empires."

"He quietly inherits them."

Every fake pregnancy...

Every marriage...

Every stolen identity...

Had always served the same purpose.

To place his people inside the wealthiest families on earth.

At that exact moment...

Outside the estate...

Liam glanced toward the security cameras.

His eyes lingered on one lens for barely a second.

Victor didn't notice.

But Liam intentionally blinked twice.

Then looked toward the east side of the property.

Margaret suddenly leaned closer to the monitor.

"What is it?"

She replayed the footage.

Again.

Twice.

Three times.

Then she smiled.

"He's sending us a message."

Elena looked confused.

"What message?"

Margaret pointed toward the screen.

"He looked toward the eastern fence."

"There's an old service tunnel beneath it."

Elena's heart raced.

"He's telling us where he'll escape."

"No."

Margaret corrected gently.

"He's telling us where we should rescue him."

Just then...

Ethan's SUV sped through the estate gates.

Nathan jumped out before the vehicle stopped moving.

"Margaret!"

She hurried outside.

"You came."

Ethan looked at the monitors.

Then at Liam.

For the first time...

He understood exactly what was happening.

Victor hadn't brought Liam to negotiate.

He had brought him as a shield.

Nathan stared silently at the screen.

He didn't know Liam.

But he recognized the expression in the young man's eyes.

It was the same expression he had once seen on Elena.

The look of someone trapped so long...

They had forgotten what freedom felt like.

Suddenly...

Every security monitor went black.

One after another.

The estate lost power.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Then...

A loud explosion echoed from the eastern wall.

The service tunnel.

Victor hadn't missed Liam's signal after all.

Smoke poured into the courtyard.

Security guards shouted.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Margaret looked at Ethan.

"They're coming in."

Ethan calmly picked up the file labeled THE DIRECTOR and handed it to Nathan.

"If anything happens..."

"Get this to Detective Collins."

Nathan nodded.

"What about you?"

Ethan checked the magazine in his pistol.

"I'm bringing Liam and Elena home."

The front doors exploded inward.

Armed men flooded the entrance hall.

And standing behind them...

May you like

With a calm smile on his face...

Was Victor Hale.
