CHAPTER 13 — The Enemy Within

The mansion fell silent.
Smoke drifted through the shattered entrance.
Armed men stood behind Victor Hale, their weapons lowered but ready.
Victor slowly applauded.
Each clap echoed through the grand hall.
"You've all been very busy."
No one answered.
Then he smiled.
"You're all fighting the wrong man..."
He looked around the room.
"...because the Director is already inside this house."
Every face changed.
Nathan instinctively turned toward Ethan.
Ethan looked at Margaret.
Margaret looked toward her own security team.
For one terrifying moment...
No one trusted anyone.
Victor enjoyed the silence.
"Go ahead."
"Look around."
"One of you has been feeding me information for years."
Elena's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
Margaret's longtime bodyguard, Thomas, immediately stepped forward.
"He's lying."
Victor laughed.
"Is he?"
He slowly removed a small remote from his pocket.
Pressed one button.
Margaret's office computer suddenly powered on by itself.
A hidden file began playing across the large monitor.
Private security routes.
Camera locations.
Escape tunnels.
Every confidential blueprint of the estate.
Someone inside had copied everything.
Months ago.
Margaret's face hardened.
Only six people had access to those files.
Nathan whispered,
"How is this possible?"
Ethan remained calm.
"Because Victor never attacks without help."
Victor nodded approvingly.
"Exactly."
He looked toward Margaret.
"You spent twenty years building a fortress."
"I spent twenty years placing one person inside it."
Thomas suddenly drew his pistol.
Not toward Victor.
Toward Ethan.
The room exploded into chaos.
Elena gasped.
Nathan instinctively stepped in front of his brother.
"Thomas!"
Margaret stared in disbelief.
"No..."
Thomas's expression remained emotionless.
"I'm sorry."
"You should have stopped looking."
Margaret's hands trembled.
"You worked for me for seventeen years."
Thomas nodded.
"I worked..."
"...for whoever paid me."
Victor smiled.
"My best investment."
Before Thomas could pull the trigger...
A gunshot echoed through the hall.
Thomas cried out.
The pistol flew from his hand.
Everyone turned.
Liam stood near the staircase.
Smoke curled from the barrel of his gun.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Liam."
Liam lowered the weapon slightly.
"I'm done following orders."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"You ungrateful boy."
Liam took another step forward.
"You stole my sister."
"You stole my childhood."
"You don't own me anymore."
Victor's expression became ice cold.
He raised his own weapon.
Without hesitation...
He fired.
"Liam!"
Elena screamed.
The bullet struck a marble pillar inches from Liam's head.
Security guards returned fire.
Glass shattered.
The grand hall erupted into gunfire.
Ethan grabbed Nathan.
"Move!"
They pulled Margaret behind an overturned table.
Elena crawled toward Liam through the chaos.
Outside...
Police sirens finally surrounded the estate.
Detective Sarah Collins had ignored Ethan's earlier warning.
She had called every available tactical unit.
Armored vehicles blocked every exit.
A helicopter circled overhead.
Victor glanced toward the windows.
"They're early."
One of his men rushed over.
"Boss..."
"We're surrounded."
Victor remained strangely calm.
"No."
"They're surrounded."
Inside the confusion...
Thomas quietly reached into his jacket.
Not for a gun.
For a small black device.
Margaret saw it immediately.
"No!"
Thomas pressed the button.
Deep beneath the mansion...
A powerful explosion shook the foundation.
The lights flickered violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Nathan struggled to keep his balance.
"What was that?"
Margaret's face turned pale.
"The archives."
Everyone rushed toward the underground staircase.
Smoke poured upward.
The fire suppression system activated automatically.
Water flooded the corridors.
Margaret forced open the heavy steel archive door.
Flames consumed shelves of evidence.
Twenty years of investigations.
Victim statements.
Financial records.
Original documents.
Everything burned.
Margaret stood frozen.
"No..."
Victor appeared behind them.
"You always cared too much about paper."
Margaret slowly turned.
"I can rebuild the files."
Victor smiled.
"I know."
"But dead witnesses don't testify."
At that moment...
Liam stepped between Victor and Elena.
He held up a small flash drive.
"You'll never destroy this."
Victor's eyes fixed on it.
"What is that?"
Liam smiled for the first time.
"Everything."
Victor's calm demeanor cracked.
"You copied my servers."
"Three months ago."
Every armed man in the hallway froze.
Victor slowly extended one hand.
"Give it to me."
Liam shook his head.
"No."
Victor fired again.
The bullet struck Liam's shoulder.
He collapsed.
The flash drive slid across the wet floor.
Everyone lunged toward it at once.
Victor.
Ethan.
Thomas.
One small piece of evidence...
Worth more than every fortune Victor had ever stolen.
Nathan reached it first.
He grabbed the drive just as Thomas tackled him.
Both men crashed into the flooded hallway.
Thomas wrapped both hands around Nathan's throat.
"Give it back!"
Nathan struggled to breathe.
The flash drive slipped from his fingers.
It skidded across the floor...
Stopping at Elena's feet.
Without thinking...
Elena picked it up.
Victor looked directly into her eyes.
His voice became strangely gentle.
"Elena."
"Come home."
She stared at the man who had controlled her life for twelve years.
The man who had erased her name.
The man who had stolen her brother.
Then she looked down at the flash drive.
Finally...
She made her choice.
She turned.
And threw the drive to Ethan.
Victor's face twisted with rage.
For the first time...
He had truly lost control of her.
Ethan caught the drive.
Victor shouted,
"Kill them!"
Armed men charged forward.
But before they could fire...
The mansion's front windows exploded inward.
Tactical officers stormed the hall.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
The firefight ended almost instantly.
Several of Victor's men surrendered.
Others attempted to flee.
Victor disappeared into the smoke.
Again.
Minutes later...
Ambulances filled the estate.
Liam was rushed into surgery.
Thomas was taken away in handcuffs.
Margaret watched firefighters battle the archive blaze.
Nathan walked toward Ethan.
"You have the drive?"
Ethan slowly opened his hand.
The flash drive was still there.
Untouched.
David, his arm still in a sling, arrived breathless from the hospital.
"What did Liam risk his life for?"
Ethan inserted the drive into his laptop.
One folder appeared.
Its title consisted of only two words.
DIRECTOR FILES
The folder contained hundreds of encrypted documents.
And one video.
Recorded only forty-eight hours earlier.
Ethan clicked Play.
The screen lit up.
Victor Hale appeared.
He wasn't alone.
Standing beside him...
Smiling confidently at the camera...
Was someone every person in the room recognized.
Nathan staggered backward.
His voice barely escaped his lips.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Because the Director wasn't a stranger.
He wasn't a criminal hiding in the shadows.
May you like
He was one of the country's most celebrated philanthropists...
And Nathan's lifelong mentor.
