CHAPTER 6 — The Belly Falls

Ethan didn't sleep.
He sat alone in his office until sunrise.
The USB drive lay beside his laptop.
The security footage had played so many times that he could almost recite every second from memory.
Vanessa arriving without a baby bump.
Vanessa leaving with one.
There was no misunderstanding.
No innocent explanation.
The woman Nathan loved...
Had been wearing a lie.
His phone buzzed.
David.
"I confirmed it."
Ethan answered immediately.
"What did you find?"
"The man calling himself Mr. Black..."
"...doesn't exist."
Ethan remained silent.
David continued.
"His real name is Victor Hale."
"He disappeared twenty years ago after investigators linked him to the suspicious death of a billionaire's only heir."
Ethan slowly closed his eyes.
"So this has happened before."
David's voice turned grim.
"I think it's happened many times."
Meanwhile...
Nathan stood in the nursery, smiling as he placed the last stuffed animal on a shelf.
Everything was ready.
The crib.
The changing table.
The rocking chair.
Even the tiny mobile hanging above the bed.
He imagined a baby's laughter filling the room.
A little hand wrapping around his finger.
A tiny voice calling him...
"Dad."
He smiled to himself.
Across the hallway...
Vanessa watched him.
Her chest tightened.
She had started this as a job.
A performance.
A carefully planned deception.
But somewhere along the way...
Nathan's kindness had become real.
He never yelled.
Never doubted her.
Never treated her with anything less than love.
For the first time...
She wished the baby had been real.
That evening...
The Bennett family gathered for another Sunday dinner.
Nathan wanted one peaceful night.
No business.
No arguments.
Just family.
Vanessa arrived wearing a flowing cream-colored designer dress.
The new silicone belly fit perfectly beneath it.
She moved carefully.
Slowly.
Exactly the way a woman seven months pregnant should.
Evelyn smiled proudly.
"Look at you."
"You've grown so much."
Nathan laughed.
"Our little one is getting bigger every week."
Vanessa forced another smile.
Only Ethan noticed how pale she looked.
Dinner began.
Wine was poured.
Stories were shared.
Nathan couldn't stop talking about baby names.
"If it's a boy..."
"I like Noah."
Evelyn nodded.
"And if it's a girl?"
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
"You choose."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"I haven't decided."
Nathan reached across the table and squeezed her hand.
"We have time."
Those words pierced her heart.
Time...
Was the one thing she no longer had.
Halfway through dinner...
Nathan stood.
"I have another surprise."
Everyone looked at him.
"I hired a private obstetrician."
Vanessa froze.
"He'll come to the house tomorrow."
Nathan smiled.
"I thought it'd be easier than making you travel."
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Vanessa couldn't breathe.
"What?"
"He'll perform a routine examination."
"Heartbeat."
"General check-up."
"Just to make sure everything's okay."
Evelyn clapped happily.
"What a wonderful idea."
Vanessa's fingers tightened around her wine glass.
"No."
Nathan blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't want another doctor."
Nathan laughed gently.
"Why not?"
"My doctor already knows my case."
Ethan quietly watched every expression on her face.
Fear.
Real fear.
Nathan frowned.
"I thought this would make you feel safer."
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"I said no."
The room fell silent.
Nathan looked confused.
"Vanessa..."
"Why are you so upset?"
She realized everyone was staring.
She immediately softened her voice.
"I'm sorry."
"I just..."
"...don't like changing doctors."
Nathan slowly nodded.
"If that's what you want."
He backed down.
Again.
Exactly as she knew he would.
Ethan could stay silent no longer.
"Why?"
Vanessa turned toward him.
"What?"
"If everything is normal..."
"Why are you afraid of another examination?"
Nathan sighed heavily.
"Ethan."
"Not tonight."
But Ethan ignored him.
He looked directly at Vanessa.
"You've avoided every appointment Nathan wanted to attend."
"You've never introduced anyone to your doctor."
"You refuse every independent examination."
"Why?"
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"You don't trust me."
Ethan answered calmly.
"No."
"I trust evidence."
Nathan slammed his hand onto the table.
"Enough!"
"Ethan..."
"She's pregnant."
"Stop interrogating my wife."
Ethan slowly reached into his jacket.
"I wish I could."
He placed the tiny metal pin onto the table.
Everyone looked at it.
Nathan frowned.
"What is that?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Instead...
He picked up the pin.
Walked slowly toward Vanessa.
She instinctively stepped backward.
"Ethan..."
"Don't."
He stopped only a few feet away.
His voice remained quiet.
"So tell everyone."
"What does this pin hold together?"
Vanessa's face turned white.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You do."
Nathan stepped between them.
"Leave her alone."
Ethan looked at his brother.
"I've been trying to."
"But she won't stop lying to you."
Vanessa continued backing away.
One step.
Then another.
Her heel caught the edge of the dining room rug.
She lost her balance.
Nathan reached out.
"Vanessa!"
She twisted awkwardly.
The pin Ethan had removed moments earlier had loosened the hidden support straps beneath her dress.
A faint ripping sound echoed through the silent room.
Then...
Something heavy slipped.
A dull thud broke the silence.
Everyone looked down.
Lying on the polished marble floor...
Was a lifelike silicone pregnancy belly.
Perfectly shaped.
Perfectly painted.
Perfectly fake.
For several endless seconds...
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Nathan stared at it.
His face drained of all color.
His lips parted.
But no words came.
Slowly...
Almost mechanically...
He looked up at Vanessa.
Then back at the object on the floor.
His voice was barely audible.
"What..."
"...is that?"
Vanessa covered her face.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
"It's not..."
"It's not what you think..."
Nathan took one step backward.
Then another.
As though the woman standing before him had suddenly become a stranger.
Evelyn gasped.
"No..."
"No..."
"This can't be..."
She picked up the silicone belly with trembling hands.
It felt real.
Too real.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
"You lied..."
The words broke her.
"You lied to all of us."
Nathan turned slowly toward Ethan.
His eyes were filled with confusion.
Pain.
Disbelief.
"You..."
"You knew?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"I suspected."
Nathan's voice cracked.
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I needed proof."
Nathan looked at the fake belly again.
The nursery.
The baby clothes.
The tiny shoes.
The dreams.
Every memory shattered in a single moment.
His knees nearly gave out.
He whispered to himself...
"There was never a baby..."
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Because every person in that room realized the same horrifying truth.
May you like
The pregnancy that had brought the family together...
Had never existed.
