CHAPTER 5 — The Video She Never Wanted Anyone to See

Ethan stared at the anonymous package for nearly a minute.
No return address.
No fingerprints.
Only a small USB drive.
Attached to it was a single handwritten note.
She can't erase everything.
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No signature.
Ethan closed his office door, inserted the drive into his laptop, and waited.
One folder appeared.
SECURITY FOOTAGE
His pulse quickened.
He clicked the first file.
The video came from a security camera overlooking the parking garage beneath the abandoned warehouse.
The timestamp read:
7:42 P.M. — Three Days Earlier.
Vanessa stepped out of her car.
She looked around carefully.
Making sure no one was watching.
Then she opened the trunk.
She removed a large black travel bag.
A few seconds later...
She disappeared behind a steel door.
Nothing unusual.
Until thirty minutes later.
The same door opened again.
Vanessa walked back toward her car.
But this time...
She looked completely different.
She was walking slower.
One hand supported her lower back.
Her stomach was noticeably larger.
She opened the trunk once more.
Placed the empty bag inside.
Closed it.
Then gently rubbed her "pregnant" belly before driving away.
Ethan paused the video.
He replayed it.
Again.
And again.
There was no doubt.
She had entered the warehouse without a baby bump...
And left wearing one.
He immediately called David.
"You need to see this."
Twenty minutes later, David arrived.
The two men watched the footage together.
When it ended...
David slowly leaned back in his chair.
"This is enough."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
David frowned.
"What do you mean, no?"
"It proves she's wearing a fake belly."
"It doesn't prove why."
"It doesn't prove who's behind her."
"And it won't explain everything to Nathan."
David sighed.
"Then what are you waiting for?"
Ethan looked out the window.
"The truth."
"The whole truth."
Across town...
Nathan stood inside the nursery.
He carefully hung a small wooden sign above the crib.
Welcome Home, Little One.
Vanessa watched from the doorway.
"You've done so much."
Nathan smiled.
"I've waited my entire life to hear someone call me Dad."
Those words struck Vanessa harder than she expected.
She forced herself to smile.
"You'll be an amazing father."
Nathan walked over and kissed her forehead.
"I just want our child to grow up knowing they're loved."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
For a brief moment...
She almost told him everything.
Almost.
Then her phone vibrated.
One message.
Delete every remaining file. Ethan is getting closer.
Her heart sank.
That afternoon...
Ethan visited Saint Andrew Medical Center again.
This time...
He wasn't looking for Vanessa.
He wanted information about the ultrasound report she had shown Nathan.
A radiologist examined the printed images.
He needed less than thirty seconds.
"These aren't authentic."
Ethan remained silent.
The doctor continued.
"The patient information has been digitally inserted."
"The scan itself belongs to someone else."
"Whoever made this knew what they were doing."
Ethan thanked him.
Another piece of the puzzle had fallen into place.
Meanwhile...
Vanessa arrived at Mr. Black's office.
Unlike the warehouse...
This place looked legitimate.
Luxury furniture.
Expensive artwork.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
Mr. Black stood beside the glass.
Without turning around, he asked,
"How is Nathan?"
"He still believes me."
"And Ethan?"
"He won't stop investigating."
Mr. Black finally faced her.
His expression remained cold.
"Then perhaps it's time to accelerate the plan."
Vanessa frowned.
"What plan?"
"The wedding."
She blinked.
"We're already married."
Mr. Black smiled faintly.
"I'm not talking about Nathan."
He opened a drawer and removed a thick folder.
Across the front were two words.
Phase Two.
Vanessa slowly opened it.
Inside were legal documents.
Trust agreements.
Inheritance records.
Investment portfolios.
She looked confused.
"What is this?"
Mr. Black answered calmly.
"The real reason we chose Nathan."
Vanessa's face lost all color.
"You told me this was about money."
"It is."
"But not his money."
Mr. Black tapped one document.
"Three months from now..."
"Nathan becomes co-trustee of the Hawthorne Family Foundation."
Vanessa frowned.
"So?"
"So whoever is legally married to him gains access to confidential financial authority."
She stared at him.
"You never told me that."
"You never asked."
Vanessa suddenly realized something horrifying.
She had believed she was manipulating Nathan.
In reality...
She had also been manipulated.
That evening...
Nathan invited the entire family over to finalize plans for the gender reveal party.
Decorators arrived.
Florists filled the house with white roses.
Musicians tested sound equipment.
Everyone was excited.
Everyone except Ethan.
He quietly watched Vanessa as she greeted guests.
Every smile looked rehearsed.
Every touch felt calculated.
Every word sounded perfect.
Too perfect.
Dinner began.
Nathan stood and raised his glass.
"I want to thank everyone."
"My family."
"My friends."
"And especially Vanessa."
He looked at her with complete sincerity.
"You've given me the greatest gift I could ever receive."
Vanessa forced a smile.
Across the table...
Ethan could barely look at his brother.
Because he knew...
Nathan wasn't celebrating a miracle.
He was celebrating a lie.
As dessert was served...
Nathan suddenly smiled.
"I almost forgot."
"I have another surprise."
Vanessa froze.
"What surprise?"
Nathan reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small velvet box.
Everyone gasped.
Vanessa's breathing stopped.
Nathan slowly opened it.
Inside...
Was a custom diamond necklace.
At its center hung a tiny baby footprint made from white gold.
"I wanted you to have something..."
"...to remember this pregnancy forever."
Vanessa stared at the necklace.
Her hands began to tremble.
Nathan gently fastened it around her neck.
The room erupted into applause.
Only Ethan remained silent.
Because in his pocket...
Was the USB drive proving that every moment unfolding before him...
Was built on deception.
And he knew...
May you like
The longer the lie continued...
The more devastating the truth would become.
