CHAPTER 8 — The Secret Apartment

Nathan didn't leave the nursery until dawn.

The rocking chair never stopped moving.

Not because anyone sat in it...

But because he had absentmindedly pushed it hours earlier.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Like a father soothing a child who had never existed.

The tiny baby shoes still rested in his hands.

He had spent weeks dreaming about first steps.

First words.

First birthdays.

Now...

All he had left was silence.

Across the hall...

Vanessa hadn't slept either.

She sat on the bedroom floor, staring at the fake pregnancy belly lying in the corner.

It had become the symbol of everything she hated.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The fear.

For months, it had protected her.

Now...

It had destroyed her.

Her phone vibrated.

One message.

Apartment 17. 9:00 A.M. Come alone.

No name.

No signature.

She already knew who sent it.

Victor Hale.

At exactly nine o'clock...

Vanessa parked outside an aging apartment building on the east side of the city.

No luxury cars.

No security guards.

No cameras.

Just an ordinary building that blended into the neighborhood.

She took the elevator to the fourth floor.

Apartment 17.

The door was already unlocked.

She stepped inside.

Then froze.

The apartment looked nothing like a home.

It looked like an operations center.

Walls covered with photographs.

Maps.

Financial charts.

Identity documents.

Shelves lined with wigs, passports, designer handbags, and expensive jewelry.

Everything needed to create a completely different life.

Then she saw them.

Dozens of storage boxes.

Each carefully labeled.

Client A-12

Client B-07

Client C-19

Curious, she opened one.

Inside...

A silicone pregnancy belly.

A forged prenatal medical file.

Ultrasound images.

A fake wedding certificate.

A new passport.

And cash.

Nearly one hundred thousand dollars.

Vanessa slowly opened another box.

The same contents.

Another.

The same.

Different names.

Different victims.

Same plan.

She whispered to herself,

"My God..."

"You finally understand."

Victor's voice echoed from behind her.

Vanessa turned.

He stood calmly in the doorway.

Hands in his pockets.

Watching her.

"You lied to me."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"I simply didn't tell you everything."

"You said Nathan was the job."

"He was."

"So why are there dozens of these?"

Victor walked toward the shelves.

"Because Nathan..."

"...was never the only one."

He gestured toward the wall of photographs.

"There are twenty-three active operations."

"Different cities."

Different billionaires.

Different families.

Different inheritances.

Every woman here followed the same script.

Meet the target.

Earn his trust.

Marry him.

Create an heir.

Gain legal influence.

Disappear.

Vanessa felt sick.

"This is insanity."

Victor corrected her.

"It's business."

Meanwhile...

Ethan and David arrived at the address from the old newspaper clipping.

The building had long since been abandoned.

Broken windows.

Collapsed roof.

Dust everywhere.

David frowned.

"This was the last registered address of Victor Hale's first company."

Ethan looked around.

"Let's search."

Most rooms were empty.

Until they reached the basement.

Hidden behind a rusted metal cabinet...

They discovered a narrow steel door.

Locked from the outside.

David forced it open.

The room beyond hadn't been touched in years.

Old filing cabinets.

Boxes of records.

Stacks of photographs.

Ethan's pulse quickened.

"We found his archive."

They began opening boxes.

Every folder belonged to another victim.

Businessmen.

Politicians.

Investors.

Widowers.

Professional athletes.

Each file contained surveillance reports.

Financial profiles.

Family histories.

One thing connected every target.

Every man was expected to inherit enormous wealth.

David whispered,

"He hunts families..."

"...not people."

Then Ethan noticed a red folder.

Across the front were two words.

Nathan Bennett

He quickly opened it.

Inside was everything.

Nathan's school records.

University transcripts.

Medical history.

Business contracts.

Even childhood photographs.

Someone had been watching Nathan...

For years.

Long before he ever met Vanessa.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

"This wasn't random."

David nodded.

"They selected him."

Back at Apartment 17...

Vanessa wandered deeper into the apartment.

A second room stood partially open.

She stepped inside.

Rows of framed family portraits covered the walls.

Happy couples.

Wedding photographs.

Pregnancy announcements.

Baby showers.

She frowned.

Something felt wrong.

She walked closer.

Every smiling woman...

Was one of Victor's recruits.

Some photographs ended happily.

Others had thick black X marks painted across them.

Vanessa's heartbeat accelerated.

"What do the X's mean?"

Victor answered without emotion.

"Failed operations."

She slowly turned toward him.

"What happened to them?"

Victor's silence lasted several seconds.

Then he answered.

"They became liabilities."

Vanessa suddenly understood.

The women hadn't simply disappeared.

They had been erased.

Fear flooded through her.

She backed toward the door.

"I want out."

Victor smiled.

"You don't get out."

"I've done everything you asked."

"Not yet."

"You failed to complete Phase Two."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I won't do it."

Victor stepped closer.

"You don't have a choice."

His calm voice was somehow more terrifying than shouting.

"You know too much."

At that exact moment...

A loud crash echoed from the living room.

Someone had kicked in the apartment door.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Police?"

Another voice answered.

"No."

Ethan.

Victor's expression changed for the first time.

He hadn't expected Ethan to find the apartment so quickly.

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Hope returned to her face.

"Ethan!"

Victor grabbed her arm.

"If you speak..."

"...you die first."

Ethan slowly entered the apartment.

David followed behind him.

Both men stopped.

The walls.

The fake identities.

The pregnancy bellies.

The photographs.

It was worse than they had imagined.

David whispered,

"My God..."

Ethan's eyes locked onto Vanessa.

Then shifted to Victor.

"So..."

"This is where the lies begin."

Victor smiled faintly.

"No."

He looked around the apartment.

"This..."

"...is where empires fall."

Before Ethan could take another step...

The lights suddenly went out.

The apartment plunged into darkness.

A gunshot echoed through the building.

Then another.

Someone screamed.

When the emergency lights finally flickered on...

Victor Hale was gone.

Vanessa had disappeared.

And lying unconscious on the floor...

May you like

Was David.

His shirt stained with blood.
