Chapter 13 – Justice

Chapter 13 – Justice

Justice was never simple.

Victor Blackwood knew that better than anyone.

In his world, people often confused justice with revenge.

They believed the strongest person always won.

They believed money could erase consequences.

They believed fear could control the truth.

But Victor had spent his entire life learning one thing:

Fear could force people to obey.

It could never force them to believe.

And now, after everything that happened, Victor no longer wanted revenge.

He wanted the truth.

For Ethan.

For Isabella.

For Lily.

Two days after the fire, Chicago was silent.

The headlines had changed.

The story about Lily being a dangerous nanny had collapsed.

The full security recordings had been released.

The edited video Serena created was exposed.

Experts confirmed the footage had been manipulated.

Witnesses came forward.

Former employees testified.

The world that had judged Lily so quickly was now forced to face what had really happened.

She was not the villain.

She was the person who had fought to protect a child.

Lily sat inside the Blackwood mansion library, reading the news.

She still found it strange.

Only days ago, strangers called her a monster.

Now those same people called her a hero.

But she didn’t feel like one.

She only remembered Ethan crying.

The fear in his eyes.

The pain he suffered.

“I don’t care what they say.”

Victor’s voice came from behind her.

She looked up.

He stood near the doorway.

His injuries were still visible.

But he was already trying to return to work.

“You should be resting.”

He ignored that.

“You protected him.”

Lily looked down.

“I should have protected him sooner.”

Victor frowned.

“Lily.”

She shook her head.

“If I had noticed Serena was capable of that…”

“You are not responsible for Serena’s choices.”

The certainty in his voice surprised her.

Victor walked closer.

“You saved him.”

A pause.

“And you saved me.”

Lily looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Victor looked away.

Because admitting it was difficult.

“You reminded me that not everything in my life had to be controlled by fear.”

That morning, Marcus arrived with news.

“Sir.”

Victor looked up.

“What did you find?”

Marcus placed several files on the table.

“Richard Blackwood has been located.”

Everyone became silent.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Where?”

“An old private hospital outside the city.”

Lily looked at him.

“Is he badly injured?”

Marcus nodded.

“The fire hurt him.”

Victor stood.

“Take me there.”

Richard Blackwood looked different.

The confidence was gone.

The arrogance.

The belief that he could control everything.

He sat in a hospital bed, surrounded by security.

When Victor entered, Richard smiled weakly.

“I wondered when you’d come.”

Victor looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because you need answers.”

Victor remained silent.

Richard laughed softly.

“You always hated uncertainty.”

“You killed Isabella.”

The smile disappeared.

“No.”

Victor stepped closer.

“You planned everything.”

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“Serena did.”

Victor froze.

“What?”

Richard smiled.

“There’s the problem with you, Victor.”

A pause.

“You always believe you understand people.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Richard looked toward the window.

“Serena was never my puppet.”

Silence.

“She came to me.”

The truth slowly came out.

Serena had found Richard years earlier.

She knew about the Blackwood inheritance.

She knew Ethan’s existence complicated everything.

She believed marrying Victor would give her power.

But Richard had his own ambitions.

They worked together.

At first.

Until Serena became too ambitious.

“She thought she could control everyone.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“She thought she was smarter than me.”

Victor looked at him.

“And Isabella?”

Richard’s expression changed.

“She discovered everything.”

“Did you kill her?”

A long silence.

Then Richard answered:

“No.”

Victor stared.

“Then who?”

Richard looked directly at him.

“You really don’t know.”

A cold feeling entered Victor’s chest.

“What are you saying?”

Richard leaned back.

“Serena was afraid Isabella would expose her.”

A pause.

“But Serena didn’t act alone.”

Before Victor could ask more, the hospital doors opened.

Security moved quickly.

A woman entered.

Handcuffed.

Serena.

Victor stared.

“How?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“We found her attempting to leave the country.”

Serena looked at Victor.

Not afraid.

Not anymore.

Because she knew something.

She knew the final secret.

The interrogation room was simple.

No luxury.

No power.

No performance.

For the first time, Serena had nothing protecting her.

Victor sat across from her.

“Where is the missing truth?”

Serena smiled.

“You still think you can force me to talk.”

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“I already know.”

That surprised her.

“What?”

“Richard told me.”

Her expression changed.

A small crack.

Victor saw it.

“You trusted him.”

Serena laughed.

“I trusted nobody.”

“Then why work with him?”

“Because he understood.”

“Understood what?”

Her eyes became cold.

“That the Blackwood family was built on lies.”

Victor placed the diary on the table.

“Isabella knew.”

Serena looked at it.

For the first time, sadness appeared.

Real sadness.

“She was too kind.”

Victor frowned.

“What?”

“Isabella.”

Serena looked down.

“She actually believed people could change.”

A pause.

“I hated that about her.”

Victor stared.

“You hated her because she was good.”

Serena didn’t answer.

Because it was true.

“Tell me what happened.”

Serena remained silent.

Then finally:

“Isabella found out about Ethan.”

Victor froze.

“About what?”

Serena looked at him.

“Ethan was not supposed to be the heir.”

Victor’s face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Explain.”

Serena smiled sadly.

“Your family had secrets before I arrived.”

She leaned forward.

“Ethan’s birth records were changed.”

Victor’s hands tightened.

“Why?”

“Because someone wanted him protected.”

“Who?”

Serena looked at him.

“Isabella.”

The truth was finally revealed.

Years earlier, Isabella discovered someone inside the Blackwood family wanted to use Ethan as a political and financial tool.

A child was not seen as a person.

Only as a symbol.

A future heir.

A weapon.

Isabella changed records to hide Ethan’s identity.

She wanted him to grow up free from the family war.

But someone discovered her plan.

And that person tried to erase her.

“Who?”

Victor’s voice was barely a whisper.

Serena looked away.

“I don’t know everything.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

For the first time, Serena looked genuinely afraid.

“There is someone else.”

Victor stared.

“Who?”

Serena hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your father’s old advisor.”

Victor froze.

Impossible.

The man had disappeared years ago.

Dead.

Or so everyone believed.

The final evidence came that evening.

A hidden file recovered from the burned estate.

Inside:

Bank transfers.

Old photographs.

Letters.

And one name.

The man who had secretly controlled events from the beginning.

Edward Blackwood.

Victor’s father’s former advisor.

The man who knew every secret of the family.

The man who had manipulated Richard.

The man who had helped Serena.

But there was one more discovery.

A letter from Isabella.

A letter written for Victor.

Not hidden.

Not incomplete.

The final message.

Victor opened it slowly.

His hands shook.

The first line destroyed him.

“Victor, if you are reading this, then our son is safe.”

He continued.

“Please forgive me for hiding the truth.”

A tear formed in his eyes.

Because Isabella had never stopped loving him.

“Ethan is your son. I never doubted that. I only hid his identity because I feared what our enemies would do if they knew the truth.”

Victor closed his eyes.

The greatest fear was gone.

Ethan was his.

Always had been.

That night, Victor returned home.

Lily was waiting.

She immediately noticed his expression.

“What happened?”

Victor looked toward Ethan.

The child was playing quietly.

“He’s my son.”

Lily smiled.

“I know.”

Victor looked at her.

“You never doubted it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

She looked at Ethan.

“Because he has your heart.”

For a moment, Victor couldn’t speak.

The next morning, justice finally arrived.

Serena was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, assault, and attempted murder.

Richard faced the same fate.

The remaining traitors inside the Blackwood organization were arrested.

The truth was public.

The lies were destroyed.

But Victor knew something.

Punishment was not the end.

Healing was.

Months later, Victor visited Isabella’s grave.

He stood silently.

“I finally know.”

The wind moved gently.

“I should have protected you.”

A pause.

“But I protected him.”

He looked at the flowers.

“Thank you for giving me Ethan.”

Then he turned.

Because this time, when he walked away…

He was not walking toward war.

He was walking toward his family.

But one question remained.

After everything they survived…

Could Victor Blackwood, a man built from darkness, truly learn how to live in the light?

And could Lily Carter believe that she was no longer just a nanny?

The answer would come soon.

Because sometimes…
