Chapter 30 - The Lesson of Power

|

The fever broke three days later.

Ethan was sitting on the living room rug, playing with a small fleet of toy cars.

Victor was sitting in the armchair, reading a book, simply enjoying the quiet sound of his son's energy returning.

Suddenly, Ethan stopped playing.

He looked up at his father, his expression incredibly serious.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, Ethan?”

“Jimmy at school said his dad is a police officer. He catches bad men.”

Victor slowly closed his book.

He knew this conversation was inevitable.

“That is a very important job,” Victor said carefully.

Ethan tilted his head.

“Jimmy said you used to be a bad man.”

The words struck Victor like a physical blow.

He felt the sudden, terrifying urge to lie.

To protect his son's innocence for just a few more years.

To tell him that Jimmy was wrong.

But Victor looked at Ethan’s trusting eyes and knew that a relationship built on lies was doomed to shatter.

“Jimmy is right,” Victor said quietly.

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly.

“You were bad?”

Victor leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

“A long time ago, before you were born, I did things that were wrong. I hurt people. I was very angry, and I used power to make people afraid of me.”

Ethan processed this information slowly.

He looked at the toy cars, then back at his father.

“Why did you stop?”

Victor felt a lump rise in his throat.

He looked toward the hallway, where he could hear Lily humming softly in the kitchen.

“Because I met your mother,” Victor answered honestly. “And then, I had you.”

Ethan crawled across the rug and stood in front of his father’s knees.

“Are you still bad?”

Victor looked deeply into his son's eyes.

“I spend every single day trying to be good, Ethan. Trying to make up for the mistakes I made. Power is just a tool. It depends on how you use it. I use mine to protect our family now. To build things, instead of breaking them.”

Ethan stared at him for a long, silent moment.

Then, he wrapped his small arms around Victor’s neck.

“I think you are a good man, Daddy.”

Victor closed his eyes, holding his son fiercely against his chest.

A single tear escaped and buried itself in Ethan’s hair.

The forgiveness of a child was a pure, unearned grace.

And Victor swore, in the quiet of that room, to never betray it again.
