Chapter 34 - The Portrait

|

The grand dining room of the Blackwood estate featured a massive, blank space above the stone fireplace.

For years, Victor had refused to hang anything there.

His father had hung a portrait of himself, scowling down at the table like a cruel king.

Victor had burned it the day he took over the family.

But now, Lily had quietly commissioned a local artist.

It was a surprise for Victor's fortieth birthday.

When Victor walked into the dining room that evening, the lights were dim.

Lily and Ethan were standing in front of the fireplace.

“Happy birthday, Daddy!” Ethan cheered.

Victor smiled, walking toward them.

“Thank you, buddy.”

Lily turned to him, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Look up,” she whispered.

Victor raised his eyes to the space above the mantle.

A massive, beautifully painted oil canvas hung in the center.

It was not a portrait of a solitary, angry king.

It was a painting of the three of them.

Victor was sitting in a leather chair, looking relaxed, a genuine smile on his face.

Lily was standing behind him, her hand resting lovingly on his shoulder.

And Ethan was sitting on the floor, laughing brightly, holding a small wooden block.

The colors were warm, full of golden light and deep, rich shadows.

It captured their absolute joy.

Victor stared at the painting, completely speechless.

He felt a tight lump form in his throat.

“Do you like it?” Lily asked softly, stepping closer to him.

Victor reached out and took her hand, his eyes never leaving the canvas.

“It is… perfect.”

“The painter said I have a very good smile,” Ethan added proudly.

Victor laughed, a thick, emotional sound.

“He was right. You have the best smile in the world.”

Victor looked at the painting again.

It was a declaration to the world, and to history.

The Blackwood name would no longer be associated with fear, violence, or isolation.

It would be remembered by this image.

A family that loved each other fiercely.

A family that had survived the darkness and finally stepped into the light.

“Thank you,” Victor whispered, pulling Lily into a deep kiss.

It was the greatest gift he had ever received.
