Chapter 16 - The School Gates

|
The morning sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting long, golden shadows across the stone walls of the Blackwood estate.
Today was different.
Today was the day Victor had secretly dreaded for months.
Ethan’s first day of school.
For a normal father, this was a simple milestone.
A day of pride.
A day of photographs and bright smiles.
For Victor Blackwood, it was a tactical nightmare.
He stood in the grand foyer, his posture rigid, watching Lily carefully adjust Ethan’s small blue tie.
“You look handsome,” Lily said, smoothing his collar.
Ethan grinned, proudly adjusting his heavy backpack on his shoulders.
“I am going to learn everything,” the boy announced.
Victor forced a smile, though his chest felt incredibly tight.
He had spent five long years keeping his son behind high walls.
Behind armed guards, heavy gates, and bulletproof glass.
Now, he was sending him out into the unpredictable world.
A world that knew the heavy name of Blackwood.
A world that had not always been kind.
Marcus walked into the room, holding a digital tablet.
“The perimeter is clear,” Marcus said quietly.
“And the detail?” Victor asked.
“We have a security detail stationed three blocks away. Plainclothes. They won't interfere unless absolutely necessary.”
Victor nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving his son.
“Make sure they stay invisible. He needs to feel normal.”
Marcus understood perfectly.
Ethan turned and looked at his father with bright, innocent eyes.
“Are you coming with me?”
“Yes,” Victor said, stepping forward. “I wouldn't miss it.”
The ride to the prestigious academy was entirely quiet.
Victor looked out the tinted window, calculating every angle.
Every car that drove too close.
Every pedestrian that lingered too long on the sidewalk.
Lily reached over and gently took his hand.
“He will be fine, Victor. He is ready.”
He looked at her.
Her eyes were calm.
Steady.
The anchor he always needed in the storm.
“I know,” Victor lied softly.
When they arrived, the school courtyard was filled with children.
Laughter.
Chaos.
Ethan did not hesitate for a single second.
He let go of Victor's hand and looked toward the large wooden doors.
“Bye, Daddy!”
Victor watched him run toward the entrance, blending into the crowd.
He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest.
Not from fear.
But from the profound realization that his son was growing up.

And for the first time in his life, Victor realized that true strength was not holding on.
It was learning exactly how to let go.
