Chapter 31 - The Winter Snow

|

The first snow of the year fell softly over Chicago in late December.

It blanketed the Blackwood estate in a thick, pristine layer of pure white.

The world outside seemed entirely silent, insulated by the falling flakes.

Inside the massive mansion, the fireplaces blazed, casting a warm, flickering light across the hardwood floors.

Victor stood by the large bay window in his study, holding a glass of scotch, watching the snow fall.

The city looked peaceful.

Clean.

Untouched by the blood and greed that usually ran through its concrete veins.

Lily walked into the room, wrapped in a thick cashmere sweater.

She stood beside him, slipping her arm through his.

“It’s beautiful,” she murmured, resting her head on his shoulder.

“It hides all the dirt,” Victor noted quietly.

Lily looked up at him, a gentle smile playing on her lips.

“It doesn't hide it, Victor. It transforms it. It gives everything a fresh start.”

Victor took a sip of his drink, letting the warmth settle in his chest.

He looked out at the massive oak tree where the crooked treehouse still stood, its roof now covered in snow.

“Ethan is asleep,” Lily said softly. “He tried to wait up to watch the snow, but he didn't make it.”

“He had a long day,” Victor smiled. “He built a snow fort with Marcus this afternoon. I think Marcus enjoyed it more than he did.”

Lily laughed, a bright, musical sound.

“Marcus is getting soft.”

“Don't tell him that. He will glare at you.”

They stood together in the quiet room, completely content.

Victor realized that he had spent his entire youth chasing power because he thought it would buy him this exact feeling.

Security.

Peace.

Silence.

But power had only brought chaos.

It was love that had finally brought the silence.

“I am happy,” Victor said suddenly, as if the words surprised even him.

Lily turned and looked at his face.

His features were relaxed.

The harsh lines of tension that used to permanently frame his jaw were gone.

“I know,” she whispered, reaching up to touch his cheek.

Victor put his glass down on the windowsill and wrapped both arms around her, pulling her close.

He didn't need to conquer the world anymore.

His entire world was already standing perfectly safely in his arms.
