CHAPTER 10 – THE FILE ROOM

CHAPTER 10 – THE FILE ROOM
Daniel led Emily and Noah down a narrow hallway.
At the end of the hallway was a door that read:
ARCHIVE
He used a key card.
The light turned green.
The door opened.
Emily stepped inside.
She was instantly stunned.
Tall filing cabinets stretched to the ceiling, reaching the end of the room.
Each drawer contained hundreds of files.
Daniel took down a file.
He placed it on the desk.
SUBJECT E-17
Emily saw her photo.
Date of birth.
Blood type.
Fingerprints.
Brain scan.
Test results.
Even...
There were transcripts of her private conversations over the years.
Emily trembled as she flipped to the last page.
There was a line of text.
STATUS: SUCCESSFUL MEMORY RECONSTRUCTION
"What is this?"
Daniel replied.
"Experiment files."
"What experiment?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"They're not just trying to hide a crime."
"They're learning how to alter human memories."
Emily shook her head.
"Impossible."
"Possible."
Daniel opened another file.
This time...
It was Jonathan's.
Emily saw the first line.
PROJECT SUPERVISOR
She froze.
"No..."
"Jonathan isn't just involved."
"He's the director."
Emily turned to the next page.
A photograph fell to the floor.
It was her wedding photo.
But...
There was a man standing behind the couple.
A man Emily couldn't remember was present that day.
The man was smiling.
Daniel bent down to pick up the photo.
His voice deepened.
"Finally..."
"...we know who's behind this."
Emily looked at the man's face.
A strange sense of familiarity welled up inside her.
But she couldn't remember his name.
Just then...
The entire power system went out.
Darkness engulfed the room.
A voice came from the loudspeaker.
"Did you get the file, Daniel?"
Daniel froze.
He recognized the voice instantly.
"Long time no see."
"My former student."
Daniel whispered.
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"You know him?"
Daniel slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"And if I guess correctly..."
"...then he never died."
A soft chuckle from the loudspeaker.
A eerily calm laugh.
"Welcome."
"To the final level of truth."
Immediately afterwards...
Each filing cabinet in the room began to slide automatically to the sides.
Behind them...
A secret room, never before seen on any map, was revealed.
In the middle of the room...
Was a hospital bed.
On that bed...
A woman was sleeping.
Emily only looked for a second...
Then dropped the file.
Because the person lying on the bed...
Was it Emily.
Or rather...
A person whose face was identical to hers in every detail.
She slowly opened her eyes.
Smiled.
And spoke in a voice exactly like Emily's.
May you like
"Hello..."
"I've been waiting for you for a long time."
