CHAPTER 9 – THE FALSE DETECTIVE

CHAPTER 9 – THE FALSE DETECTIVE

Emily didn't lower the iron bar.

"What did you just say?"

The man slowly placed the gun on the floor.

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

"But I'm no longer an inspector."

Noah pulled Emily back.

"Don't trust him."

"Three years ago, I saw him in a police uniform too."

Daniel froze.

"You remember me?"

Noah nodded.

"You brought a girl in here."

The atmosphere instantly became tense.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Emily tightened her grip on the iron bar.

"So you worked for them?"

"I used to."

"But not anymore."

He pulled a police badge from his pocket.

Then he broke it in half right in front of them.

"I spent two years trying to find my way back here."

"To save the survivors."

Emily didn't relax.

"If you're telling the truth..."

"...name the first person who died."

Daniel looked at her for a long time.

Then he replied,

"No one died."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel pointed to the row of glass rooms.

"They want the world to believe the victims are dead."

"Death certificates."

"Funerals."

"Coffins."

"It's all a charade."

"The dead..."

"...were actually all transferred to this facility."

Emily felt a chill run down her spine.

"If so..."

"How many people?"

Daniel answered with a number that silenced the room.

"Two hundred and fourteen."

Noah whispered softly.

"Oh my God..."

Daniel continued.

"And that's just the people I've identified."

Suddenly...

The emergency lights changed from red to green.

Daniel's expression changed.

"This isn't good."

"They've sealed off Zone C."

"We have to leave immediately."
